Songs without explicit lyrics not necessarily 'clean'

"Even a child is known by his actions, by whether his conduct is pure and right." Proverbs 20:11

I came across this blog the other day and thought I would share it. It's about parents who think they are protecting their children from the nastiness of the entertainment industry, when in fact, their kids are being exposed to a lot of suggestive and raw material. It's quite eye opening, especially if you are not one to check out lyrics or music videos.

I love the questions he asks - can you answer them?
  • Do you know what the most popular song is on Itunes right now?
  • Is it explicit?
  • Have you seen the video?
I'll add my own question. Do you know what your child's favorite song is right now?

I have the hardest parenting of my teen brother that I am taking care of him. He is 17 going on 18 in 5 months. He listen heavy rocks, raps, gothics songs. It hard for me to tell him no he cannot listen to it but only thing I tell him that if I am around I don't want to hear it. Suggestion or comments?

Anonymous, I know your question wasn't for me, but I'd suggest you start by being interested in why he likes those songs, what it is he relates to. That could be an opening for many conversations.

I agree with the previous comment - ask him what he likes about the songs. Also, you can offer him some alternatives that are more positive. If he's into hard rock, suggest a bands like Red, Decyfer Down, or August Burns Red. Suggest KJ-52 for rap. Hope that helps!
